BEAGLE EXPERIENCE — PATAGONIA

Patagonia Doesn’t Disappoint. It Just Requires Getting There.

Five days in El Calafate at the edge of Los Glaciares National Park. A private fishing day on Patagonian waters, a full day at Perito Moreno Glacier, and the most celebrated trek in Patagonia to the base of Mount Fitz Roy.

THE EXPERIENCE

Five Days in One of the Last Great Wild Places.

El Calafate sits at the edge of Los Glaciares National Park in southern Argentine Patagonia, which means it sits at the edge of a place that the rest of the world cannot quite believe exists until they see it. The Perito Moreno Glacier alone — a wall of blue ice three miles wide and 200 feet tall that is still advancing, still calving, still operating on a geological timescale that makes everything else feel small — justifies the flight south.

This experience builds five days around that landscape and the other things Patagonia does exceptionally well. A full day on private Patagonian waters with a local fishing guide. A complete day at Perito Moreno, with the choice of walking on the glacier or following the panoramic walkways above it. And a full day trek through Patagonian forest and glacial river valleys to Laguna de los Tres, the lake at the base of Mount Fitz Roy, which is the photograph that puts Patagonia on the wall of every adventure travel office in the world.

Base is Design Suites Calafate, a hotel built for this landscape — floor-to-ceiling glass, materials that read as Patagonian rather than imported, and a restaurant that understands what the region produces.

THE ITINERARY

Five Days. The Real Patagonia.

DAY 1

Arrival in El Calafate

The flight south to El Calafate is itself a preparation. The landscape changes below you as Patagonia announces itself through the window — flat steppe, cold lakes, mountains at the edge of the horizon that keep getting larger.

Upon arrival, private transfer to Design Suites Calafate. The hotel is set on a hillside above the town with lake views from every room and the kind of quiet that only arrives when the nearest city is a two-hour flight away. The afternoon is free — walk into town, sit with the landscape, let the pace of Patagonia settle in.

Dinner at the hotel restaurant. The kitchen works with what the region produces. That is, as it turns out, quite a lot.

HIGHLIGHTS

Private transfer from El Calafate Airport · Check-in at Design Suites Calafate · Free afternoon to explore · Dinner at hotel restaurant

DAY 2

Private Fishing Day

Breakfast at the hotel at 8:30 AM, then out onto Patagonian water with a private local fishing guide. The guide provides all equipment — fly fishing, casting, or spinning — and all transfers for the day.

What makes Patagonian fishing distinctive is everything else that comes with it. The water runs cold and clear through landscapes that see very few people. The guide knows the rivers the way a person who has fished them for twenty years knows a river — which runs hold fish at which time of year, which pools fish better from the bank and which from the water, what the Andean wind means for the day. Fishing in this kind of company is different from fishing with an instruction sheet.

During the excursion, a traditional Patagonian lunch is served on the water. A charcuterie board, local cold cuts, chorizo, salad, and red wine. The menu adapts to dietary preferences with advance notice.

HIGHLIGHTS

Private fishing guide from 8:30 AM · All equipment provided · Fly fishing, casting, or spinning · Traditional Patagonian lunch on the water · Full-day excursion with private transfers

DAY 3

Perito Moreno Glacier

One of those days that does not require language to describe afterward. You either see the Perito Moreno Glacier or you have not seen it — photographs prepare you to some degree, but the sound alone, the constant low artillery crack of ice shifting and calving into the milky green water below, is something that only happens in person.

Perito Moreno sits within Los Glaciares National Park, one of the largest freshwater reserves in the world. The glacier stretches 30 kilometers back into the Andes, advancing at roughly two meters per day while calving from its face — one of the few glaciers in the world that is neither retreating nor static.

Two ways to spend the day:

GLACIER WALK

For those who want to get onto the ice, a guided glacier walk brings you onto crampons and onto the surface of the glacier itself.

PANORAMIC WALKWAYS

For those who prefer the view from above, the panoramic observation walkways offer elevated platforms directly across the water from the glacier face, with the best angles for watching calving events and understanding the scale.

Full day at the glacier. Lunch in the park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Full-day excursion to Los Glaciares National Park · Perito Moreno Glacier · Choice of glacier walk or panoramic walkways · Lunch in the park

DAY 4

Laguna de los Tres and Mount Fitz Roy

The Laguna de los Tres trek is 21 kilometers round trip with approximately 900 meters of elevation gain at the end. It is the kind of hike where the last push feels like it will not be worth it, and then it is.

The trail begins in El Chaltén, the small trekking village at the base of the Fitz Roy massif, and moves through lenga beech forest and across glacial rivers before climbing steeply to the final ridge. At the top, Laguna de los Tres sits below the west face of Mount Fitz Roy — the granite towers that Yvon Chouinard and his team climbed in 1968 and that became the image that defines Patagonia in the global imagination. The water is a color that is difficult to describe as anything other than the specific blue of glacial melt on a clear day.

An early start. Full day. Worth it.

Full-day guided trek to Laguna de los Tres · El Chaltén village · Lenga beech forest and glacial river crossings · Summit viewpoint at Mount Fitz Roy

Patagonia Is the Place That Changes What You Think Travel Is.

Most places that are described as remote are not actually remote. They are merely inconvenient to reach by the standards of modern travel. Patagonia is genuinely remote in the older sense of the word — at the southern end of the continent, in a landscape that the 20th century barely touched, where the glaciers are older than any human history and the mountains were formed in events that human vocabulary is too small to describe properly.

What surprises most visitors is not the scale, which they expected from photographs. It is the silence. El Calafate sits at the edge of a national park larger than some European countries, and on a clear Patagonian morning with no wind, standing at the edge of a glacial lake with nothing moving, the silence is the kind of thing that resets something in a person.

It is worth going once in a lifetime. Most people who go once go back.

WHERE YOU STAY

Design Suites Calafate.

Design Suites Calafate is built into the hillside above the town with unobstructed views across Lago Argentino and toward the mountains of Los Glaciares National Park. The architecture works with the landscape rather than against it — warm wood, stone, and floor-to-ceiling glass that makes the view part of every room.

The hotel has an indoor pool, a spa, and a restaurant that takes Patagonian ingredients seriously. After a full day on the glacier or a 21-kilometer trek, a hotel that understands what the day asked of you matters more than any amenity list suggests.
