Cafayate sits at nearly 1,700 meters above sea level in Argentina’s Salta province, ringed by red canyon walls and some of the most unusual wine terroir in the world. This four-day journey moves between its vine rows, its gorges, and its tables.
Most wine regions ask you to choose between the glass and the landscape. Cafayate refuses that deal. The Calchaquí Valleys are geologically violent country: towers of red and ochre sandstone rising above desert scrub, riverbeds cutting through ancient rock, skies that go from blazing blue to deep amber without negotiation. And threaded through all of it, at altitudes that would disqualify most wine regions, vineyards producing Torrontés and Malbec with a character you will not find anywhere else on earth. This four-day itinerary was built around that combination. Day two puts you inside the wine world properly: a morning at Bodega Viña El Flor followed by lunch and an afternoon tasting at Piattelli Vineyards, with dinner at one of the town’s most celebrated restaurants. Day three takes you outside: a morning trek through the striking landscapes of El Paso, a traditional countryside barbecue under open sky, and an afternoon on horseback winding through Cañón del Zorrito. The days before and after give you the rhythm of Cafayate itself — arrival through beautiful valleys, departure with the unhurried pace this town earns. For those with an extra day, the optional extension to Bodega Colomé adds one of Argentina’s oldest and most exclusive wine estates, a visit to the James Turrell Museum, and lunch at Estancia Colomé deep in the Calchaquí highlands.
· BODEGA COLOMÉ TOUR & TASTING · JAMES TURRELL MUSEUM · LUNCH AT ESTANCIA COLOMÉ
The journey to Cafayate from San Miguel de Tucumán is one of those drives that justifies the trip before you even arrive. The road passes through valleys that change color by the hour, past cardón cacti standing sentinel on the hillsides and river crossings that have been wearing the same stones for centuries. The Quebrada del Toro and the Quebrada de las Conchas are among the most photographed landscapes in Argentina, and you move through them at road level, which is a different thing from seeing them in a picture.
You arrive in Cafayate in the afternoon. Hotel check-in is unhurried, and the rest of the day is yours to settle in and let the altitude and the quiet work on you. In the evening, dinner is served at the hotel — a proper introduction to the regional flavors of northwest Argentina and a good beginning to what follows.
· SCENIC TRANSFER FROM TUCUMÁN · HOTEL CHECK-IN · DINNER AT THE HOTEL
Hotel pickup at 10:00 AM begins what is the heart of the Cafayate experience. The morning takes you to Bodega Viña El Flor, one of the valley’s most distinctive producers, where the particular character of Calchaquí wine becomes clear: the desert air, the altitude, the ancient soil underneath the vines, and the Torrontés grape in the environment that suits it best. Lunch is at Piattelli Vineyards Restaurant, seated among the vine rows with the mountains close behind and a glass of something very good in front of you. The afternoon continues with a guided tour of the Piattelli estate and a formal tasting session before the transfer back to the hotel around 6:00 PM. Dinner that evening is at one of Cafayate’s celebrated restaurants: Pacha Cocina de Autor, Bad Brothers Wine Experience, or Pausa Bodega El Porvenir, depending on availability and your preference. Each is a worthy ending to a day spent with excellent wine.
· BODEGA VIÑA EL FLOR · LUNCH & TASTING AT PIATTELLI · DINNER AT LOCAL RESTAURANT
Hotel pickup at 8:30 AM takes you into an entirely different side of the Calchaquí Valleys. The morning is a trekking experience through El Paso, a stretch of landscape where the rock formations press close and the silence is absolute. This is the desert at its most honest: no crowds, no infrastructure, just terrain doing what it has always done. At midday, a traditional countryside barbecue is served in a rural setting. The asado that emerges from those hours over wood is the kind of meal people mention later as the highlight of a trip, eaten outside with the hills around you and no reason to be anywhere else. The afternoon moves to horseback. The ride through Cañón del Zorrito explores the hidden reaches of the valley that cannot be reached any other way, passing through narrow rock passages and open plateaus as the light changes the color of everything around you. Return to the hotel around 6:30 PM, and dinner again at one of the town’s best tables.
· TREKKING IN EL PASO · COUNTRYSIDE BARBECUE LUNCH · HORSEBACK RIDING IN CAÑÓN DEL ZORRITO
The last morning in Cafayate is for whatever you did not get to. A walk through the central plaza. A final stop at one of the town’s wine shops to bring something back. A quiet coffee watching the valley wake up in the early light before the heat of the day arrives. Hotel checkout is followed by your private transfer out of Cafayate, returning through the same extraordinary landscape that welcomed you on day one. You will know its colors a little better now.
· FINAL MORNING IN CAFAYATE · HOTEL CHECKOUT · DEPARTURE TRANSFER
An hour and a half from Cafayate through the upper Calchaquí Valleys, Bodega Colomé is one of Argentina’s oldest and most exclusive wine estates. The drive alone, through terrain that grows progressively more remote and more beautiful, earns the commitment. The day includes a guided winery tour and tasting at Colomé, followed by a visit to the James Turrell Museum — a permanent collection of the internationally acclaimed light and space artist housed in a dedicated gallery on the estate grounds. It is one of the most surprising and memorable cultural experiences in all of northern Argentina, appearing with no warning in the middle of wine country at altitude. Lunch is at Estancia Colomé, bringing together wine, art, food, and one of the most striking natural settings in the country. Guests can return to Cafayate the same evening or extend with an overnight stay at the Estancia.

It puts the wine country experience at the center of your stay from the moment you arrive.
The hotel sits on its own vineyards, with working vines visible from the grounds. The connection to the land is immediate and genuine — not decorative.

Thick adobe walls, arched corridors, and interior courtyards that hold the cool air through the hottest afternoon. The architecture is native to the region and entirely appropriate to it.
The Calchaquí ranges frame the property on multiple sides. Mornings here, with coffee on the terrace and the mountains in early light, are the kind that slow a person down in exactly the right way.
Depending on availability and preference, accommodation may also be arranged at Piattelli Wine Resort or Vieja Posada Hotel Histórico, two equally distinctive properties in Cafayate. Your Beagle advisor will confirm the best option for your travel dates.
Cafayate’s reputation among serious wine travelers has grown steadily for two decades, and it has earned every bit of that attention. The Torrontés produced here reaches a level of aromatic intensity and character that it achieves almost nowhere else on earth. The altitude, the desert conditions, the intense Andean UV — they produce wines with a concentration and a fragrance that people tend not to forget, and that cannot be explained by grape variety alone. But Cafayate is not only about the glass. The Calchaquí Valleys belong to a landscape that has been shaping the people of northwest Argentina for thousands of years. The pre-Columbian agricultural terraces still visible on the hillsides, the colonial towns strung along the valley roads, the rhythms of a place that has always moved on its own terms — these things give the region a depth that pure wine destinations rarely manage. What Beagle brings to Cafayate is access: to the right estates, the right tables, the trails that matter, and the local knowledge that turns four days into something that genuinely stays with you long after you have left.
