THE EXPERIENCE

Brigitte Bardot Found It in 1964. It Has Not Been the Same Since.

When Brigitte Bardot arrived in Búzios in the 1960s, the peninsula was a small fishing village with a few hundred residents and a harbor full of wooden boats. She told people about it. Slowly, then all at once, Búzios became what it is today: one of the most sophisticated coastal destinations in South America, with the kind of beach quality and culinary scene that takes decades to build and a fishing village atmosphere that somehow survived the transformation.

The peninsula sits in the state of Rio de Janeiro, about three hours east of the city by road. It is not a long-haul destination within Brazil — it is a place you go deliberately, and stay for a few days, because the beaches alone are worth the trip.

This experience is built around the things Búzios actually does well: private boat excursions to the most beautiful bays on the peninsula, mornings in the water, afternoons in the town, a coastal hiking day with views that most visitors never find, and two evenings at the kind of restaurants that make the food part of what you came for. Stayed at Insólito Boutique Hotel and Spa, which sits above the water on the peninsula’s quieter side with views that are immediately obvious on arrival.

THE ITINERARY

Five Days. The Peninsula at Its Best.

DAY 1

Rio de Janeiro to the Peninsula

Fly into Rio de Janeiro — Galeão International Airport receives international connections — then private transfer out of the city and east along the coast toward Búzios. The drive is three hours and the landscape shifts progressively from Rio’s urban sprawl to coastal hills, fishing villages, and eventually the long peninsula approach that signals you are nearly there.

Check in to Insólito Boutique Hotel and Spa, settle in, and then an optional afternoon: the hotel staff can arrange a city tour through downtown Búzios led by a local English-speaking guide. The town’s main pedestrian street, Rua das Pedras, runs for a few blocks and is the kind of stretch that justifies a slow walk — boutiques, art galleries, open-air cafés, and a rhythm that feels definitively Brazilian without feeling rushed.

Evening along Orla Bardot, the waterfront promenade named for the actress who put the town on the map. Dinner with an ocean view and the bronze Bardot statue a few meters away, which is either very charming or a small bit surreal depending on how you look at it.

HIGHLIGHTS

Private transfer Rio to Búzios · Hotel check-in · Optional downtown Búzios city tour · Rua das Pedras · Dinner along Orla Bardot

DAY 2

Boat Excursion and the Beaches

Breakfast at the hotel. Then out on the water.

A private boat departs from the harbor in the morning with an English-speaking guide, and the next few hours are spent moving along the peninsula’s coastline, stopping at the beaches that most visitors to Búzios never reach from the land side. The boat visits Praia da Tartaruga, Praia de João Fernandes, and Praia Azeda — three of the bays that make the boat excursion the best single activity the peninsula offers. The water in these bays runs from turquoise to the kind of blue that photographs look artificial, and the visibility for snorkeling is good enough that the sandy floor is clearly visible at depth. Time in the water at each stop.

Lunch is served on board — fresh seafood with the coastline as the backdrop.

Back at the harbor in the afternoon, then down to Praia de Geribá, one of Búzios’ most open beaches, which faces the Atlantic rather than the calmer bay side of the peninsula. The energy here is different: larger waves, surf culture, paddleboard rentals, and a stretch of sand long enough to find space. Optional surfing and paddleboarding for those who want it, or simply an afternoon on the beach.

Dinner in the evening at a local restaurant with live music — the kind of evening that is very specifically Búzios, where the food is fresh and the atmosphere is doing half the work.

HIGHLIGHTS

Private guided boat excursion · Praia da Tartaruga · Praia de João Fernandes · Praia Azeda · Snorkeling stops · Seafood lunch on board · Praia de Geribá afternoon · Live music dinner

DAY 3

Hiking, Culture, and Wine

Morning hike through Serra das Emerências, the coastal range that rises above the peninsula and offers views across the bays and out to the open Atlantic. The trail runs through native Atlantic Forest vegetation — bromeliads, coastal palms, the kind of dense tropical scrub that holds birds — with a private English-speaking guide. From the higher points, the full geography of the peninsula is laid out below: the bays you were swimming in the day before, the harbor, the town, the open water beyond.

Lunch at a scenic lookout point along the trail route. Not a restaurant, but a genuine stop above the coastline with the view doing more than the food needs to.

Afternoon in Porto da Barra, the waterfront area on the peninsula’s fishing culture side. Artisan shops, local craft, a pace that reflects what Búzios was before the boutiques arrived. Worth a few hours of unhurried looking.

Dinner that evening is the culinary high point of the trip: a multi-course meal with selected wine pairings at one of Búzios’ serious restaurants. The town’s restaurant scene punches well above its size, which is partly legacy (Bardot’s visitors had appetites) and partly geography (the seafood supply is ten minutes from the kitchen).

HIGHLIGHTS

Private guided hike through Serra das Emerências · Panoramic coastal views · Lunch at scenic lookout · Porto da Barra waterfront · Multi-course wine pairing dinner

DAY 4

Spa, Churrasco, and the Last Sunset

The last full day earns a slower start. Morning at the hotel’s spa — massages, facials, and the treatments that are best appreciated when there is no schedule to keep afterward. Breakfast first, then the spa, then time to let the morning settle.

Afternoon free for the town: boutiques along Rua das Pedras, souvenir hunting, a final wander through a place you have now learned well enough to have opinions about. Lunch at a traditional Brazilian churrascaria — the kind of meal that is either completely new or immediately familiar depending on where the guest is from, and that Búzios does well given the quality of the local beef supply.

Late afternoon, the walk that ends every good trip to Búzios correctly: Praia da Ferradura, the horseshoe bay on the peninsula’s southern side. The shape of the bay means that sunset arrives from one angle and catches the water in a particular way that the more exposed beaches cannot match. The walk along the shoreline takes twenty minutes at a slow pace, with the light doing everything.

Farewell dinner at a seaside restaurant with ocean views and the warm coastal evening air that characterizes Búzios at its best.

HIGHLIGHTS

Morning spa at Insólito · Boutique shopping · Lunch at a Brazilian churrascaria · Sunset walk at Praia da Ferradura · Farewell seafood dinner

DAY 5

Departure

Final breakfast at Insólito Boutique Hotel, then check-out and private transfer west along the coast back to Rio de Janeiro. The return drive is three hours and runs the same coastal road in reverse, which is a different experience with the morning light coming from the opposite direction.

Private transfer continues to Galeão International Airport for onward international connections home.

WHERE YOU STAY

Insólito Boutique Hotel and Spa.

Insólito sits on the hillside above the Armação bay, positioned high enough that the water view is immediate from the rooms and the pool terrace rather than something you have to seek out. The hotel is small by design — boutique in the genuine sense, not the marketing sense — and the architecture is the kind of tropical modernism that takes its cues from the landscape rather than imposing on it: timber, stone, high ceilings, and openings that face the water.

The spa runs through the Day 4 morning and is integrated into the experience rather than added as an optional extra. For guests who want to extend the spa time or add additional treatments, the hotel’s team can arrange that directly.

The pool terrace looks across the bay. When the light is right in the late afternoon, it is the best seat in Búzios.

Boutique Design

A small, deliberately designed hotel on the hillside above Armação bay. The scale is the point.

Bay Views

Rooms and the pool terrace face directly across the water. The views are present from check-in.

Spa Facility

Full spa with massage, facials, and wellness treatments. The Day 4 morning spa experience is included.

Additional Amenities

Experience additional amenities designed to make your stay comfortable and memorable.

Private Transfers

All transfers, from the Rio airport arrival to the departure, are arranged.

Local Support

A Beagle International contact is available throughout the stay for any adjustments or additions.

A Fishing Village That Got Famous Without Losing What Made It Worth Finding.

Búzios is officially Armação dos Búzios, a municipality on a narrow peninsula in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The peninsula is about eight kilometers long and barely two kilometers at its widest point, which means that wherever you are, the water is close. The 23 beaches range from open Atlantic surf breaks to completely sheltered bays where the water runs still and the color runs deep.

The town’s relationship with its own fame is one of the more interesting things about it. Most places that become famous for being unspoiled tend to lose the quality that made them famous. Búzios has managed, imperfectly but genuinely, to hold onto some of the fishing village atmosphere that Bardot encountered because the peninsula itself imposes limits. There is only so much space. The water does not care about the boutiques. The boats have been in the harbor longer than the restaurants.

The food here is also worth saying plainly: Búzios is one of the better places to eat on the entire Brazilian coastline. The seafood is local, the supply chain is short, and the town’s decades as an international destination have produced a restaurant culture that takes cooking seriously.
